Biography and Description:
Alzarin Thaum was born in the soot-stained city of Karst, where the skies were always dark and opportunity was something you scraped from beneath coal dust. The son of a quiet coal merchant and a failed alchemist, he was never destined for greatness, just a life of long labor and quiet death.
But Alzarin always read. While others chased coin or comfort, he pursued ideas. His first book was pulled from a ruined smelter's office, a manual on combustion theory and spellbinding, its cover warped with heat. He taught himself to translate its arcane scrawls over five long years, learning to channel light through focus and logic.
He wasn't a prodigy. He was obsessed.
For decades, Alzarin wandered. Through Drake, where he worked as a transcriber under a paranoid hedge-wizard. Through Fortwayfare, where he bartered copied spell scrolls in alley markets. Through Krandor, where he took a false name to study under a dying war-mage too proud to admit he'd grown fond of the old man with too many questions. In every city, every backroom archive, he absorbed knowledge. Not power for power's sake, but understanding. He believed magic was the only force in the world that could be bent by effort alone.
He found Spellgard at 57, when his bones ached and his eyesight was beginning to fade. Far from ruin, Spellgard was alive, a thriving city of scholars, mages, artificers, and magical guilds. Its towers gleamed with new enchantments, and arcane lights floated above its crowded streets. In this vibrant city of ambition and learning, Alzarin finally found his place.
He didn't rise through prestige or titles, but through quiet, tireless study. He spent five years in the underlibraries and obscure halls of learning, not for accolades, but for access. While others debated theory over wine, he copied spells until his hands cramped, cross-referencing magical principles until dawn. He learned to bind magic not through raw will, but through elegant control, etched across thousands of hand-written pages.
Now, at 62, when most would seek quiet, Alzarin Thaum steps into the unknown. Not because he has something to prove, but because he has something left undone.
He's lean, silver-haired, and sharp-eyed, his body aged, but his mind razor-edged. His robes are embroider and silk, his spellbook immaculate: filled with years of study, hard-earned formulae, and margin notes written in a hand that never trembles.
Alzarin believes in freedom. In tearing down gatekeepers. In burning down false hierarchies. He is Chaotic Good, kind to the weak, cruel to the corrupt, and willing to bend or break law, oath, or order if it means lighting the way for someone else.
He doesn't expect to live forever.
But before he dies, he intends to change something that lasts.
